Turbo folk (wikipedia)
Turbo folk can be a controversial topic during discussion in Sarajevo. You can either make the other people laugh their heads off by suggesting that you share their music taste or get a chilling frown and scold from the others who state “It’s cheap folk music. Why are you listening to that?” I got a lot of this and every single time, it mused the heck out of me. This type of music originated from Serbia and has really catchy rhythms; I am a foreigner, thus care only about that. You see, people from everywhere not just Sarajevo have different tastes in music all the time. However, in other places, liking or disliking a type of music is simply related to the music or the song itself. It is not just “I was at the wedding last weekend. They played folk music there, and I did not like so I had to find someone to talk to.” Said one of my co-workers. In Sarajevo, further grill about turbo folk can open a Balkan’s Pandora box.

Through conversations with many people, I compile the following explaining the reasons why people do not like this type of music:

  1. Stupid lyrics (i don’t understand lyrics so cannot say too much about this point, something similar like “I love you don’t leave me, give virginity to you so on…”)
  2. Steal songs from other countries and write their own lyrics.
  3. Stupid dancers perform the same dance turning left, turning right.
  4. Expose too much of their bodies.
  5. This type of music comes from Serbia. (The war 1991-1995 mostly caused by the Serbs really drove a wedge between the two ethnic groups. Some Bosniaks do not like products out of Serbia.)
  6. The most famous turbo folk singer Ceca, culture icon of Serbia, is one of the wives of a Serbian war lord, Arkan who slaughtered the Bosniaks during the aggression.

One day, a group of students came to my classroom for a chitchat/gossip. One of them slashed out at her friends “You know, this Serbian turbo folk singer told the audience that it took the Turks hundreds of years to conquer Bosnia. The Serbs only need 5 mins. And these guys (pointed to her friends) went to his concert when he performed in Sarajevo.”

Okay, I’m now closing the lid of the Pandora box. Just listen to the songs, will you?

Check out the video and judge for yourself. This song is called “Tako Mlada” meaning “So Young” performed by Tanja Savic

Tako mlada lyrics

ako mlada
tako mlada
nocu sama lutam ja
zar ne zvuci ko balada
moja biografija
Ohoooo

zauvek cu da te volim
vec sam cula to
pa te pitam dal to vazi i
kad je gotovo
dali ispod crnog oka
lazna zvezda sja
prepuna je takvih
moja biografija

Tako mlada
tako mlada
nocu sama lutam ja
zar ne zvuci ko balada
moja biografija

tako mlada
tako mlada
moj je princ vec neci
nema ljubavi u mojoj
kratkoj biografiji
Ohooo ohooo ohooo
U mojoj kratkoj biografiji
Ohooo

nezalim se sto mi rusis
do detinstva most
zao mi je sto mi oci gube
nevinost

pa vec vidim
da ti reci nisu iskrene
previse je to za moje
nezne godine

2x
tako mlada
tako mlada
nocu sama lutam ja
zar ne zvuci ko balada
moja biografija

tako mlada,
tako mlada,
moj je princ vec neci
nema ljubavi u mojoj
kratkoj biografiji
Ohooo ohooo ohooo
u mojoj kratkoj biografiji
Ohooo
